In 6th grade Molly Huddle started running to get in shape for CYO basketball. She'd go out for a 1-2 mile run about 2 times per week. Those short runs were the catalyst for one of the most brilliant distance running careers in U.S. history. Molly attended Notre Dame High School in Elmira, NY.
Molly played soccer most of high school because there was no cross country team. She played soccer and basketball through her junior year. After winning the outdoor state championship in the 1500 and 3000 she wanted to try cross country. The school allowed her father to be her coach and Molly became a one-person team! She won States and finished 4th at the National Footlocker Cross Country Championships. She followed that up with a 4:22.1 1500 during indoor track then winning both the 1500 and 3000 again at states. A few weeks later she'd set a then national mark in the 2-mile running 10:01.08.
With all these accolades Molly was heavily recruited by college coaches. Her choice came down to Georgetown of Notre Dame. With her father and uncle being Notre Dame graduates the choice was Notre Dame, so Molly was off to run for the Fighting Irish! Molly qualified for the 2004 Olympic Trials in the 10,000 and she wasn't even 20 years old yet. It was then that she thought it was possible she could get better - maybe not an Olympian, but just maybe better.
After graduating from Notre Dame in 2007 with a degree in biology Molly decided to go pro. Even though an NCAA title eluded her during her time at Notre Dame, Saucony offered her a small contract. Ray Treacy started coaching her then and continues to be Molly's coach to this day. From day 1 with Treacy's group they targeted the 10K. It was that summer that Molly's running really took off. She ran personals bests in the 1500, 3000 and 5000. She qualified for the 2008 Olympic Trials with a PB 31:27.
From there things just got better. In 2010 she set the then American record in the 5,000 (14:44.76) then lowered it further in 2014 to 14:42.64. At the 2016 Rio Olympics Molly finished 6th in a still standing American record 30:13.17 in what was the fastest & greatest women's 10,000 race in history. There’s a lot more to Molly's story, but you can hear her tell it to you at Aim High!
Molly lives and trains in Providence, RI with her husband, Kurt Benninger, a former Notre Dame teammate.
