4-time NCAA Champion
5,000m - 14:55.74 (#7 U.S. all-time)
10,000m - 31:18.07(#6 U.S. all-time)
Lisa Koll started running in 8th grade the old-fashioned way….her friends were joining cross country (XC) so she did too. Until then she played soccer, volleyball, softball and basketball. She started out as the third from last girl on the team. Determined to get better she ended her 8th grade XC season the 3rd girl on the junior high team. It earned her the most improved award. During outdoor track she broke the middle school record in the 1500 running 5:37. She was hooked. She gave up all other sports to concentrate on running.
While at Fort Dodge High School (Fort Dodge, IA) Lisa became a very good high school runner with times of 4:51 and 10:16 (1500/3000). She placed as high as 8th at the state meet in XC and 3rd in the 3000 in outdoor track. But she was no one you would have thought of to set the NCAA record in the 10,000 (31:18.07) and then run 14:55.74 in the 5,000 as a post-collegian. Those times are #6 and #7 respectively on the U.S. all-time list.
In fact, there was no big recruiting frenzy for Lisa. Not one school outside of Iowa even showed interest in her. She chose Iowa State because she liked its academic reputation. That makes sense seeing how she graduated from high school with a 4.0 GPA. At Iowa State she wasn’t quite as perfect only managing a near perfect 3.98! Did we mention she completed her undergraduate studies in three years!?!
Lisa won four NCAA championships while at Iowa State. Included in those is her fabulous double victory in the 5,000/10,000 at the 2010 championships. Only three other women in history have won both those events at the NCAA’s and none since 1996. It shouldn’t surprise you that her senior year Lisa received the Honda Collegiate Women Sports Award in track and field as the nations top collegiate female athlete in the sport.
So how did Lisa go from being the high school runner no college really went out of their way for to being among the best distance runners in U.S. history? At Aim High you’ll find out!
Lisa resides in Portland, OR where she runs for the Oregon Track Club Elite under the watchful eye of Jerry Schumacher. She has a September 10 wedding planned where she’ll marry her college teammate Kiel Uhl who placed 5th in the 10,000 at the 2010 NCAA championships in 28:55.55.
