BILL RODGERS, AIM HIGH 2001

2001 Special Guest Bill Rodgers

Four-time winner Boston and New York City Marathons
Former World Record Holder - 25,000 meters (track)
5,000 meters - 13:42.0
10,000 meters - 28:04.4

Bill Rodgers went to Newington High School in Newington, Connecticut, where he joined the track team, running a 5:10 mile as a sophomore. His high school bests were 2:07 for 880 yards, 4:28.8 in the mile and 9:36 for 2 miles. Rodgers proved superior to any young runner in Connecticut, winning the state meet and placing sixth in the New England championships. Even in high school, Rodgers showed that rare combination of perseverance and ability that only champion athletes have.

Rodgers became the populist blue-collar star of the running boom, the undisputed "King of the Roads" between 1977 and 1982. Bill Rodgers picked up the running torch lit by Frank Shorter and spread it around the world. He was one of the most competitive and consistent marathoners ever. He gave the sport a new hero and a reason for the mainstream media to follow distance running. Rodgers carried road racing into a new era of professionalism. During his illustrious career, Bill Rodgers, was ranked number one in the world in the marathon three times by Track & Field News. In a six-month period he became the only person to ever win marathon's "Triple Crown" - Boston, New York City and Fukuoka.

Bill Rodgers currently resides in Sherborn, Massachusetts with his wife Gail and two daughters Elise (age 16) and Erika (age 11).
